The Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has also been delivering training to support farmers on the islands since 2003.
The Agricultural Sector is of key importance to the VCCI, and the training programs are fully-funded. The main objective of this project is to equip as well as facilitate the transfer of technical business knowledge and skills to those with the capability of transforming those skills into meaningful business schemes in the informal sector (rural areas).
We aim to help farmers gain skills to increase their crop production, monitor their quality processes as well as improve their marketing skills and approaches. The techniques taught further assist the farmers and agripreneurs to maneuver towards a more semi commercial to commercial based farming concept.
In 2013, the training program covers Pentecost, Vanualava, Gaua, Ambae, Maewo, Epi, Emae, Efate, Erromango and Tanna over a period of 9 months from March through to December. This year it is funded by Pacific Fund or Fonds Pacifique and this funding is operated by French Development Agency or Agence Française de Dévelopment (AFD).
“The farmers learnt many new skills…They feel like it is a foundation to increase development and become self-reliant economically.” – François Kavirere, VCCI Agribusiness Senior Officer and Trainer
